Do Changes in Dysfunctional Beliefs Predict Improvements in Social Anxiety Symptoms Following Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
Cho Yong-Rae

Abstract
The current study was conducted to examine the impact of changes in dysfunctional beliefs during cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on both short- and long-term reductions in social anxiety symptoms as a preliminary stage of shedding light on the mechanism of change in CBT for social anxiety disorder. In addition, the relative contributions of the three dimensions of dysfunctional beliefs were explored. Forty-six college students diagnosed with social anxiety disorder were provided with 10 weekly sessions of group CBT and completed questionnaires to assess social anxiety (social interaction and performance anxiety) symptoms and dysfunctional beliefs at pretreatment, posttreatment, and 3-month follow-up. There were significant decreases from pretreatment to posttreatment in social anxiety symptoms, as well as dysfunctional beliefs. All of these effects were maintained until three months after treatment completion. Change in dysfunctional beliefs was significantly associated with social anxiety symptoms at posttreatment, and made a significant contribution to the prediction of social anxiety symptoms at 3-month follow-up, even when controlling for pretreatment social anxiety symptoms. In particular, among the three dimensions of dysfunctional beliefs, only change in excessive demand for others¡¯ approval emerged as a significant unique correlate with short-term effects, and only change in negative social self-concepts emerged as a significant unique predictor of long-term effects. These results suggest that dysfunctional beliefs are an important contributor to both short- and long-term reductions in social anxiety symptoms following CBT.
